There are tons of store bought barbecue sauces on the market. Some of which are good, others need an extra boost of flavor. This doctored BBQ sauce recipe will help you take them from good to incredible! We recommend purchasing a bottled sauce with a mellow flavor and working up from there. Look for one that is not too smoky or deep in color.
Ingredients
- 1 bottle of “original” flavored barbecue sauce (store bought)
- Ketchup
- Cola
- Brown sugar
- Butter
- Worcestershire sauce
- Molasses
- Hot sauce (aim for a vinegar-based sauce, like Tabasco)
- Yellow mustard
- Onion powder
- Chili powder
- Black pepper
How to make doctored BBQ sauce
- Melt butter in a saucepan, and add ingredients listed on the recipe card.
- Let the sauce come to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and cook for an additional 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally. T
- Remove from the heat and cool for 5-10 minutes before using.
- If making a day in advance, let the sauce cool completely and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
- Rewarm BBQ sauce in the microwave for 40-50 seconds, until warm (not hot), stir through and use.
How to use it
We like to use this sauce in a variety of recipes. First and foremost, it makes a great basting sauce. We serve doctored BBQ sauce as a condiment for brisket or pulled pork sandwiches, and when mixed with mayonnaise, it becomes a delicious dipping sauce for french fries, onion rings, chicken nuggets, and more). It’s also perfect for smoked baked beans!

- Spice it up: Add a tablespoon or two of sriracha, cayenne pepper, or habanero jelly, etc.
- Make it sweet: Add extra honey, real maple syrup, or dark brown sugar. Zesty citrus: Add a 1/4 cup of freshly squeezed orange juice.
- Smoke it up: Add a 1/4 teaspoon of liquid smoke or smoked paprika to the sauce.
- Fruit-based: Mix in a 1/4 cup of apple, raspberry, or peach jelly to the sauce.
- Garlic lovers: Add 2-3 cloves of minced garlic!
- Umami: Add 1 teaspoon or more of Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, or liquid aminos to your doctored BBQ sauce.

Once brown sugar has melted through an sauce is well combined, remove sauce from heat and cool for 20-30 minutes. Use right away or store in a jar, plastic bottle, or air tight container in the refrigerator for up to one week after preparation.
Sauce works well on chicken, pork, beef, and some meat substitutes. You can also use this doctored delight as a table sauce.
