Dwayne Johnson’s, also known as the Rock, famous french toast breakfast went viral a few years ago. I tried it myself a few times and this is one of my favorite breakfast meals. It’s his cheat meal and I understand why. It’s rich, sweet, filling and straight up delicious. Definitely a treat for a special occasion like Christmas morning breakfast, birthday breakfast or kids day off celebration as in my case. Whatever the reason, this is one for the books.
Step 1: How to make homemade whipped cream
Once you make this simple homemade whipped cream, you will never buy store bought again. Few ingredients, few minutes to whip up and wow!
In a mixing bowl, add heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla extract. With a mixer, mix on high speed until the cream is thick.
Place in the fridge to keep cool.
Dad’s Seasonings
Must have grillin seasonings!
Step 2: Make the french toast custard.
This is where the magic happens. This custard smells amazing and tastes even better once cooked.
In a large bowl, add egg yolks, heavy whipping cream, milk, sugar, cinnamon and Dad’s Maple Bourbon rub. The rub is my little twist on this recipe and it’s perfect. The savoriness balances the massive sweetness and the maple flavors are prominent in the taste and smell.
Whisk the ingredients together and you are ready for the dip.
The Rock uses 2 inch thick slices of brioche bread. These are very think slices and the custard will penetrate through all of it if you poke tiny holes with a fork. I have done it this way before and it comes out.
For this recipe, my local store only had pre-sliced brioche bread. Take the bread slices and dunk them into the custard. Make sure to heavily coat both sides. Remove and transfer to a sheet pan. If you have any left over custard, pour the rest on the soaked toasts.
Step 3: Grill up some french toast.
This french toast meal is the perfect breakfast to make on a griddle. Yes, using a stove top and cast iron skillet will work the same.
Preheat the griddle to a medium heat. Spray some butter the flattop to prevent the french toasts from burning. Place the soaked french toast slices onto the griddle and cook 1-2 minutes per side. Flip once the bottoms are lightly brown on the bottom.
For best enjoyment, serve this amazingly delicious french toast with a spoonful of the homemade whipped cream, drizzle some maple syrup of choice, sprinkle some powder sugar over the top and enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I make this in the oven or stove top? All my recipes can be replicated in the oven, stove top or gas grill. You do not need a big green egg or weber grill to replicate any of my recipes.
