In the recent 2024 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos surprised the sports world when the organization selected former Oregon quarterback Bo Nix.
Nix was projected as a late first-round, early Day 2 candidate.
However, with signal-callers flying off the board early in the first round, Denver succumbed to peer pressure and grabbed Nix 12th overall.
Head coach Sean Payton assured Broncos fans that Nix was the guy they wanted all along.
Since then, the quarterback and quarterback guru have had a few weeks to work with each other to prepare for 2024.
When asked recently by Broncos beat reporter Zac Stevens what it’s like working with Payton, Nix responded with, “Awesome!”
“He’s got a lot of knowledge and he’s built a pedigree to where when he talks, you listen,” explained Nix.
Payton was a former college quarterback at Eastern Illinois who then played briefly in the Arena Football and Canadian Football Leagues.
His one shot in the NFL came as a three-game replacement player for the Chicago Bears during the 1987 NFL Players strike.
He then retired soon after and turned to coaching.
After working his way through the college and pro ranks, Payton became the head coach of the New Orleans Saints in 2006 and won a Super Bowl with the franchise in 2009.
Payton left the Saints after the 2021 season and was hired by Denver in 2023.
Nix was drafted to replace Russell Wilson, whom Payton worked with last season and who was released in March.
With very little competition in the Broncos’ quarterback room, Nix is expected to be the starter in Week 1 of the upcoming 2024 season.
