After being released by the Las Vegas Raiders, veteran Derek Carr became a hot commodity on the open market in the NFL, as he arguably still has a lot of football left in him and can be a solid starter who can win games on a regular basis.
The New Orleans Saints jumped at the opportunity to sign Carr in the offseason, and it seemed like an ideal fit at the time, even though the team already had Jameis Winston and Tayson Hill on the squad.
Unfortunately for Carr, this first season in New Orleans has been a forgettable one, as he really hasn’t moved the needle much for the franchise, with the team currently sporting a losing record of 6-7 after today’s win over the lowly Carolina Panthers.
It appears that tensions are rising in New Orleans when it comes to Carr and his teammates, as he got into a verbal confrontation on the field with center Erik McCoy.
After the game, head coach Dennis Allen talked about the heated exchange on the field between McCoy and Carr, according to Katherine Terrell of ESPN.
“This is a highly competitive business that we’re in. I don’t think anybody gets too sensitive. Guys want to win. And that’s really what this is all about,” Allen said.
The two players on offense that a team doesn’t want to be at odds are the center and quarterback, so this isn’t a great sign for the Saints moving forward, even if Allen claims it’s “water under the bridge” and something that was addressed.
Even though the Saints were able to get an easy win on Sunday against the one-win Panthers, it’ll be interesting to see if this issue continues for the rest of the season and whether it derails this team’s chances of being playoff-bound.
