Eagles Are Reuniting With Notable Defender In Free Agency

After a huge nosedive late in the 2023 season, the Philadelphia Eagles have apparently reloaded by agreeing to terms with free-agent running back Saquon Barkley.

Barkley will bolster their offense with his ability to make explosive plays on the ground while also giving them a supplemental pass-catcher.

But defense was the bugaboo for Philly in 2023, and on Tuesday, they took a step toward bolstering their defense by bringing back defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson on a three-year contract, per Tom Pelissero.

Gardner-Johnson played for the Eagles in 2022, and that year, he was a key reason they were able to reach the Super Bowl.

He posted 67 tackles (61 solo) and eight passes defended while leading the NFL with six interceptions that season.

In 2022, the Eagles were one of the best defensive teams in football, but they fell back in that department in 2023, finishing near the bottom of the league in several key defensive metrics.

They experienced some turnover on their coaching staff as well, as defensive coordinator Sean Desai was demoted from his play-calling duties late in the season in favor of senior defensive assistant Matt Patricia.

Desai was eventually fired in January and replaced with Vic Fangio after they lost in the Wild Card round of the playoffs to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Philly has also added defensive end Bryce Huff, who had 10.0 sacks and 21 quarterback hits in 2023 with the New York Jets.

At least on paper, they certainly seem to have what they need to become championship contenders once again this fall.
