After the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl in the 2022 season, veteran center Jason Kelce was seriously thinking about retiring from the NFL, as he felt he had nothing left to prove and it was time to concentrate on his family.
Although it looked as though Kelce was content with walking away from the game then, he decided to come back for another season because the team had a decent shot of returning to the Super Bowl, and he wasn’t fully ready to call it a career just yet.
Now that the 2023 campaign has come and gone with the Eagles failing to live up to expectations after falling apart in the second half of the regular season, Kelce is at a crossroads once again, as he remains undecided on whether he wants to return or retire.
With Kelce having one of the most popular sports podcasts around with “New Heights,” he has something he can put all his focus on, as well as his family and other off-the-field endeavors.
However, the connection with his teammates and all that comes with being a professional football player is something he’s been reluctant to give up, but the Eagles are willing to let him take his time on making his decision, according to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.
“I know this, I don’t think there’s a scenario in any of our minds, starting with [owner Jeffrey Lurie], where Jason plays anywhere else,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. “He deserves the time to decide what he wants to do. Obviously we’re gonna accommodate that because he doesn’t need to be rushed on that.”
If Kelce were genuinely ready to call it a career, he probably would’ve made that choice right after his last snap on the football field, but he didn’t.
That said, Kelce returning for at least one more season seems probable.
