After losing in the Super Bowl in heartbreaking fashion, the San Francisco 49ers have a difficult decision to make this offseason.

Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who has become their No. 1 target in their passing game, is one year away from becoming a free agent, and they will soon have to give him a contract extension.

If the two sides cannot come to an agreement, the Niners may have to trade him this offseason in order to get some value for him.

Per Josh Norris, Dan Graziano wrote for ESPN that the most likely outcome is that Aiyuk gets traded to a team where he will get more touches, not to mention the money he wants, while San Francisco will have to get a replacement for him in the draft.

Aiyuk was a first-round pick in 2020 right after the Niners lost in the Super Bowl, and he has gradually increased his production ever since coming into the NFL.

In 2022, he crossed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time, and this past season, he put up 1,342 yards while leading San Francisco in both targets and receptions.

If the team ends up losing him one way or another, they would be hard-pressed to replace his production, let alone remain a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

On the other hand, San Francisco is over the salary cap, and not only needs to give Aiyuk an extension soon, but quarterback Brock Purdy and star safety Talanoa Hufanga, who was a Pro Bowl and All-Pro First-Team selection in 2022, will need extensions soon as well.
