Ever since Peyton Manning retired following his final game, which was Super Bowl 50, the Denver Broncos have had a carousel at the quarterback position.

Since then, they have had a whopping 12 different starting quarterbacks, which includes Russell Wilson, who was supposed to be the man who would restore them to championship contention.

But that didn’t exactly happen, and now he will be officially released once the new NFL league year begins next week.

The whole situation has put plenty of pressure on head coach Sean Payton moving forward, per Nick Kosmider.

The Broncos in 2024 will have their 7th different Week 1 starter in the nine seasons since Peyton Manning retired in 2016.

No QB in Denver has won more than 13 games in that span.

Wilson was the biggest swing in an era of QB wandering and it didn’t connect.

Payton became Denver’s head coach prior to the 2023 season after a disastrous 2022 campaign, which was their first with Wilson.

In 2022, they went 5-12 as Wilson played very poorly, which played a large role in them sporting one of the worst offenses anyone had ever seen in NFL history.

It was thought that Payton, who had coached Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints to a Super Bowl championship years ago, would get the most out of Wilson and his teammates.

But it didn’t happen, as a late-season surge by the Broncos wasn’t enough, and they missed the playoffs once again.

The Broncos won’t be able to rid themselves of the remnants of Wilson right away, as they will have a massive cap hit of dead money, which will make it difficult for them to address any of their roster needs.

They have plenty of those, and in addition to a quality QB, they need help at wide receiver, cornerback, tight end, and on their front four on defense.
