In the recent NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings selected former University of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick.

The Vikings were long expected to take McCarthy, especially after the organization let Kirk Cousins leave for the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason.

As expected, questions abound about whether McCarthy is ready to be a pro quarterback and if he is able to withstand the punishment NFL defenses will dole out.

During a recent interview, the signal-caller assured Minnesota fans that he is in great shape to handle the rigors of the NFL.

“I’m in NFL shape two weeks before today,” said McCarthy. “I was staying ready so I didn’t have to get ready…I’m in shape for sure.”

During his college career, McCarthy started 28 games and only lost once.

After the Wolverines went 12-1 in 2022, the quarterback led the program to a perfect 15-0 record in 2023 and the national title.

McCarthy passed the ball for over 5,700 yards combined in both seasons and rushed for 508 yards during that time.

Several media members have speculated that he will not be able to run the ball as often in the pros, but the Vikings like that McCarthy knows how to be elusive.

Currently, Minnesota’s plan is to start veteran Sam Darnold in 2024 and let McCarthy soak in the game from the sidelines.

However, coaches frequently succumbed to temptation and started their rookies when they believed their team needed a change.

It remains to be seen whether head coach Kevin O’Connell will follow the same path.
