Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel is considered one of the biggest draft busts in league history, and a mere mention of his name would likely cause Cleveland Browns fans to let out a big sigh.
He was a first-round draft pick by the Browns in 2014, but after two incomplete seasons, his NFL career was over.
The Texas A&M product and Lone Star State native told Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe on “Club Shay Shay” that he wanted the Dallas Cowboys to draft him, but that he’s now glad it didn’t happen.
At Texas A&M, Manziel appeared to be a prime NFL prospect, but some were leery of him because of his attitude and off-the-field issues and incidents.
His rookie season in the pros was considered a big flop, and he appeared in just five games while completing 51.4 percent of his pass attempts and managing only 175 passing yards and zero passing touchdowns while throwing two interceptions.
After an equally disappointing 2015 season, the Browns released him.
Manziel has had a couple of stints in other pro football leagues, including the CFL, since leaving Cleveland, and it today looks like his football career is definitely in the rearview mirror.
There are examples of pro athletes who were busts because they couldn’t get out of their own way, but they overcame their demons and later became something of a mentor to other athletes.
