While the Kansas City Chiefs became a true dynasty by winning Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers, their opponents there, lost yet again on the NFL’s biggest stage.
As was the case in Super Bowl LIV versus the Chiefs, the 49ers built a 10-point lead, only to give it away and fall to Patrick Mahomes and crew.
While San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy didn’t play poorly, he didn’t have an outstanding game either, and in the end, his team didn’t come through.
On ESPN’s “First Take,” Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe criticized Purdy for not being able to get the job done despite having a very talented roster on his side.
“When you got that roster, you got to close the deal,” Sharpe said.
Purdy has been quite a story ever since taking over the starting job in Week 13 of last season, and since then, he has mostly played brilliantly despite being the last player taken in the 2022 draft.
But plenty in the national media have refused to give him his due, and Sunday’s devastating loss will be nothing but high-octane fuel for those pundits.
Versus the Chiefs, Purdy was 23 of 38, threw one touchdown pass, got sacked only once, and threw no interceptions.
It wasn’t an excellent performance for him, but he did enough for the 49ers to have a real shot at winning it all.
In the end, their defense, which looked very strong in the first half, couldn’t contain Mahomes and crew in the fourth quarter and overtime, and a botched punt return in the third quarter turned the tide in the Chiefs’ favor just when it looked like San Francisco was controlling the game.
The 49ers should have a real shot at returning to the big game next year, but historically, it is rare for a team to get back there after losing.
