Confidence is an amazing thing, and it can single-handedly make the difference between winning and losing a game, especially a championship game.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went through a frustrating regular season during which his young and unproven wide receivers dropped many passes in key situations, but the team still won 11 games and made it to the playoffs in one piece.
But just before the end of the regular season, Mahomes had regained his old confidence, and in fact, he sent his wife a text saying that he had decided his team was “going to win the Super Bowl,” per the NFL’s official Twitter account.
At the time, although many knew it was foolish to bet against Mahomes in the playoffs, plenty doubted if Kansas City had the ability to repeat as world champions.
But they had reinvented themselves and become a team that won with a more conservative offense while relying more on defense.
Their defense went from 16th in points allowed and 11th in total yards allowed last year to second in both categories this season.
In Sunday’s Super Bowl, they prevented the San Francisco 49ers from scoring a touchdown late in regulation and in overtime, and when Mahomes got the ball back with 7:22 left in the extra period, it seemed inevitable that he would lead his team to victory.
He did just that with the championship-winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman with six seconds remaining.
The Chiefs now intend to go for a Super Bowl three-peat, something that has never been done before.
