These grilled bacon-asparagus skewers are basted with balsamic, olive oil, and herbs and grilled to perfection! This recipe is a great way to dress up asparagus and still retain all of its nutritional benefits. The fun part is that the asparagus is cut into bite-sized pieces—a great starting point for picky eaters.

How to Trim Asparagus

  • When selecting asparagus, look for firm stalks. Anything that feels too soft is likely past its prime and should be discarded.
  • Instead, choose a sturdy, medium, to medium-large sized stalks.
  • Gently bend one of the stalks near the bottom until it snaps and breaks off.
  • Then, lay it down next to the remaining stalks and cut them to the same length.
  • Finally, cut the asparagus into thirds or 2″ long pieces.

 Ingredients

  • 1 bunch asparagus (use thicker asparagus stalks for this recipe)
  • 1 package regular cut bacon (you might have leftover bacon, but that’s always a good thing!)
  • Olive oil (sub with avocado oil)
  • Balsamic vinegar (sub with red wine vinegar or flavored balsamic)
  • Garlic
  • Dried oregano or basil
  • Soy sauce (substitute with coconut aminos or gluten-free tamari)
  • Black pepper
  • Wooden skewers

How to Make Grilled Bacon-Asparagus Skewers

  • Soak wooden skewers in cold water for 30 minutes before using them to prevent burning.
  • Preheat your grill to medium heat or 350 degrees F.
  • Wash and blot dry pre-trimmed asparagus spears. See above for more details.
  • Cut each stalk into thirds or 2″ long, even-sized pieces.
  • Combine olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, oregano, soy sauce, and black pepper in a large bowl. Toss asparagus pieces to coat.
  • Set aside. Cut bacon strips into thirds.
  • Assembling your bacon-asparagus skewers: Thread 2 pieces of asparagus onto the skewer, then fold the bacon into a weaving pattern and slide it onto the skewer. Repeat the process on each skewer, with 6 asparagus pieces and 3 pieces of bacon per skewer. Refer to the recipe image for guidance.

  • Serve immediately.
  • Store leftover kebabs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 days after preparation.
  • Reheat these grilled bacon-asparagus skewers in a 350-degree oven or skillet until warmed through.

Recipe Variations

  • Amp up the flavor factor by sprinkling grated Parmesan cheese over the cooked skewers.
  • Drizzle with a balsamic glaze before serving.
  • Experiment with different meats like turkey bacon, beef bacon, or prosciutto.
