After another impressive performance in the regular season, the San Francisco 49ers were able to win the NFC West division title with ease and then make their way to the Super Bowl after getting the best of the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions during the NFL playoffs.
Heading into the Super Bowl against the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs, Kyle Shanahan’s squad was the favorite to come out on top and win the franchise’s sixth title to become the league’s elite team once again.
Unfortunately for San Francisco, the Chiefs weren’t going down without a fight as the team went blow for blow with the 49ers throughout the entire game, leading to an overtime period, where Kansas City was able to score the game-winning touchdown.
In the aftermath of another Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs, San Francisco chose to make a surprising change as the team parted ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
With the defensive coordinator vacancy in the Bay Area being one of the most attractive jobs in the NFL, there’s been no shortage of suitors, with the team already interviewing Brandon Staley and Nick Sorensen and set to interview Daniel Bullocks later this week, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports.
With Staley recently being fired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers immediately after giving up 63 points to the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders, it’s interesting that the 49ers would have interest, as he’s struggled for years defensively.
It’ll be interesting to see who ends up with the job in San Francisco and whether that new defensive coordinator can upgrade the defense next season.
