There are a number of quarterbacks available in this year’s NFL Draft who have the potential to carry a franchise for many years to come, and that group goes beyond Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and even J.J. McCarthy.
Michael Penix Jr. hasn’t gotten as much press as the aforementioned foursome, but he is considered someone who could end up having a very solid career at the next level.
Emmanuel Acho said on FS1’s “Speak” that the New York Giants, who have the No. 6 pick, need to take Penix, citing his accuracy, quickness, and mobility.
Acho also mentioned that Giants head coach Brian Daboll was able to utilize the mobility of Josh Allen when he was the Buffalo Bills’ offensive coordinator and that he has done the same with Daniel Jones in New York.
Jones’ numbers as a rusher dramatically improved in 2022, the year Daboll took the helm in New York.
However, there have been whispers that New York wants to move on from Jones, even though they gave him a generous new contract last offseason.
After five seasons, it is clear that Jones isn’t quite a Pro Bowl-caliber signal-caller, and to make matters worse, he’s coming off a torn ACL he suffered midway through last season.
Penix took the University of Washington to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in January, where it lost to the University of Michigan, and for the season, he had 4,903 passing yards and 36 passing touchdowns.
On the other hand, the Giants badly need a legitimate threat at wide receiver, and they need help at running back after losing Saquon Barkley in free agency to the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles.
