Michael Penix Jr. isn’t one of the most attractive quarterbacks in this year’s NFL Draft class, but he’s still an intriguing one.
He recently led the University of Washington Huskies to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, where they lost to the University of Michigan, which helped raise his national profile.
Former NFL quarterback David Carr said that Penix has a “rocket attached to his left arm” while saying he’s like Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins but with a bigger arm, per NFL Total Access.
During the 2023 season, Penix threw for 4,903 yards and 36 touchdowns, although he played poorly in the national title game, completing just 27 of 51 pass attempts while throwing two interceptions.
Carr mentioned a couple of torn ACLs early in his career that could be a reason for concern, but it seems as if he has put them in the past.
It looks like the consensus among experts is that Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye are the top-three quarterback prospects in this April’s draft.
It perhaps isn’t a given that Penix will even be taken in the first round of the draft, but that could also mean that if he reaches his full potential in the NFL, a team could get a steal later on.
Pro Football Focus recently predicted where the top-six QB prospects will land, and it had Penix going to the Las Vegas Raiders, who have the No. 13 pick.
The Raiders definitely could use a signal-caller with Penix’s potential after benching veteran Jimmy Garoppolo midway through the 2023 season.
