Over the last couple of years, the AFC has been better and deeper than the NFC, and that trend seems like it will continue for the 2024 season.
One AFC team that seems to have gotten better is the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were already competitive last season by winning 10 games and making the playoffs.
They will have future Hall of Famer Russell Wilson starting at quarterback this fall, while Justin Fields, formerly of the Chicago Bears, will be backing him up — or at least that’s the plan right now.
With Pittsburgh bringing in Cordarrelle Patterson, Trey Wingo tweeted that they will be “very interesting” this coming season.
Wilson is coming to Western PA after a failed two-year stint with the Denver Broncos, during which the Broncos missed the playoffs both seasons they had him under center.
While Wilson’s numbers rebounded in 2023 after a very poor 2022, he is in his mid-30s, and there is always the chance he will struggle again with a new team or even fall off a cliff due to wear and tear.
If that happens, it could pave the way for Fields, who failed to show any meaningful development in three years with the Bears, to possibly snag the QB1 spot.
Patterson played wide receiver and was a prolific kickoff returner during his first eight NFL seasons, but when he went to the Atlanta Falcons for the 2021 season, he was converted into a running back.
While he ran for 695 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022, last season he managed just 181 yards on the ground, and his playing time with his team’s offensive unit greatly decreased.
On Tuesday, NFL owners approved big changes to the league’s kickoff rules, and perhaps those changes will result in Patterson upping his production in that department.
