Some people are picking the San Francisco 49ers to win the Super Bowl championship this upcoming season, but their future beyond the 2024 season is uncertain.
A couple of their key players are entering the final season of their contract, including cornerback Charvarius Ward, who had a sterling 2023 campaign.
Ward told Kay Adams on “Up & Adams” that he’s “trying to get that bag” and play better than he did last year.
Ward came to the 49ers two years ago as a free agent from the Kansas City Chiefs, where he won a Super Bowl ring against the 49ers in the 2019 season, and he has fortified what was already a strong defense.
Last year, he had an NFL-high 23 passes defended, as well as five interceptions, which earned him his first Pro Bowl selection in his six pro seasons.
San Francisco’s secondary has looked vulnerable at times, especially after safety Talanoa Hufanga, who was a Pro Bowl and All-Pro First-Team selection in 2022, suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 11, but Ward helped keep things together.
Overall, their defense took a step back after it was the league’s best in 2022, but the Niners have a new defensive coordinator in Nick Sorenson, and the hope is that he will restore that defense to the elite status it has previously enjoyed.
In addition to Ward, Hufanga and star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will be free agents after this coming season, and quarterback Brock Purdy is two years away from becoming a free agent.
It will be very expensive and difficult for the team to keep all of its stars and key players, but it seems as if San Francisco is committed to finding a way to make it happen and widen their championship window.
