On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs appeared to score a clutch win with just over a minute left when wide receiver Kadarius Toney caught a lateral pass from Travis Kelce and got into the end zone.
But the play was called back as Toney was called for an offside penalty prior to the snap.
It has been a frustrating season for Toney, who hasn’t emerged the way the Chiefs were hoping, but per Adam Schefter, head coach Andy Reid said the team won’t give up on him.
After trading away superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill prior to last season and losing JuJu Smith-Schuster, their most productive wideout in 2022, in free agency months ago, Kansas City has been hoping to find a new legitimate threat at that position.
Toney, a first-round draft pick in 2021 whom the team traded for last year, seemed to be a candidate, but he has only put together 25 catches for 164 yards and one touchdown in 12 games this year.
In general, the Chiefs’ wideouts have had a number of dropped passes, especially in critical situations, and they have failed to come through in the clutch the way they have in recent seasons.
They entered 2023 as the favorites to win the AFC, if not win the Super Bowl, but now they may not even win their division, as they’re just one game ahead of the second-place Denver Broncos at 8-5.
If there continues to be too much of an offensive burden on Kelce, this season for the Chiefs could end much earlier than they or their fans would like it to.
