The Chicago Bears are inching closer to making a decision on quarterback Justin Fields.
With the Carolina Panthers’ loss in Week 17, the Bears will have the No. 1 overall pick because they acquired the Panthers’ first-round pick in a trade before the 2022 draft.
That reality puts the Bears into an eerily similar position to the one they were in a year ago with Fields and the No. 1 pick: Do they move off of Fields and draft a quarterback or trade the pick away and keep Fields?
This time around, though, Chicago has a little bit more data on their quarterback before they’ll need to make a decision.
Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd believes that even though Fields has played better recently, that should actually incentivize the Bears to trade him away.
“I would move off,” he said Monday. “I think his value will never be higher.”
Fields is on pace to have career-high marks in completion percentage, passing yards, and touchdown passes this year, and he’s been on fire over the past five weeks.
Since Week 12, Fields has gone 4-1, completed 59.2 percent of his passes, and averaged 208.8 passing yards per game.
Those are great numbers, but it might not be enough to convince the Bears to keep Fields because of his inconsistent play over the course of his career.
It might also, as Cowherd suggested, increase what teams are willing to give up to acquire Fields.
This will be the biggest question the Bears need to answer this offseason, and they’ll have a few more months before they have to decide.
