There have been a lot of problems revolving around the Philadelphia Eagles recently.
They just lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 35-31, are 3-4 since their Week 10 bye and effectively relinquished the No. 1 seed in the NFC as well as the NFC East crown in the past month.
There are plenty of issues on this team, but Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd believes it all boils down to how the Eagles have been coached by Nick Sirianni.
“When teams have personnel but they can’t resolve issues, that’s a head coach issue,” Cowherd said.
That’s a pretty bold statement to make about a coach whose team is still 11-5 a year after going to a Super Bowl a year ago, but not one that shouldn’t be discussed.
Sirianni isn’t a bad coach, but his inability to correct the blatant flaws of the Eagles isn’t good for Philadelphia.
The Eagles defense struggled all year without Jonathan Gannon, but Sirianni waited to change the defensive play-caller until the problems were basically unfixable and installed a coach in Matt Patricia with a bad recent track record.
The offense has also been inconsistent without Shane Steichen as offensive coordinator, yet Sirianni hasn’t truly been able to find a way to right the ship with Brian Johnson.
It’s the job of the head coach to oversee and resolve as many issues as he can, and Sirianni appears not to have done that through 17 weeks.
The Eagles are still a threat in the playoffs, but they won’t be Super Bowl contenders if they can’t find ways to return to the best versions of themselves.
