For the first time since Thanksgiving, when they suffered a demoralizing 45-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on national television, the Washington Commanders will be back on the field on Sunday to take on an 8-3 Miami Dolphins team.
Things will be a little different for the Commanders for this matchup, however, as it will be their first game this season without Jack Del Rio as the team’s defensive coordinator.
Washington fired Del Rio after the loss to the Cowboys, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Twitter, Commanders interim defensive backs coach Cristian Garcia will have a larger role on Sunday against the Dolphins and when it comes to making the actual game plan.
Schefter also points out that Garcia is one of the youngest assistant coaches in the NFL this season at the age of 29.
But he’s clearly done enough to impress Washington head coach Ron Rivera this year to be given the opportunity to help with the defensive game plan for Sunday’s game against Miami.
Since beginning the 2023 campaign with a 2-1 record, the Commanders have only won two of their last nine games, and as the current No. 14 seed in the NFC, making the playoffs is highly unlikely for them this season.
Could Washington have a little extra motivation to prove their doubters wrong on Sunday in their first game without Del Rio leading the defense?
It’s possible, but even if the Commanders had a respectable record this season, getting a victory over a Dolphins team that has won five of their last seven games would still be a tall task.
