What looked like a promising 2023 season for the Miami Dolphins ended in disappointment when they lost in the Wild Card round of the playoffs to the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
So far in free agency, they lost a key piece in defensive end Christian Wilkins, who is joining the Las Vegas Raiders, as well as linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel and star cornerback Xavien Howard.
But Miami is now adding a solid contributor on defense by agreeing to terms with veteran safety Jordan Poyer, who spent the last seven seasons with the Buffalo Bills, per Ian Rapoport.
It was the Bills who denied Miami a first-place finish in the AFC East in 2023 by defeating them in Week 18 in South Florida.
Many accused the Dolphins, who finished the regular season with an 11-6 record, of being a fraudulent team, and defense seemed to be the main culprit.
The departure of Howard leaves a pretty big void in the secondary, but perhaps Poyer, who made the Pro Bowl in 2022, will make his absence easier to deal with.
The Dolphins were just 22nd in points allowed and 25th in passing touchdowns given up, and of their 11 wins, only one came against a squad that finished above .500.
In quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and star wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, not to mention running backs Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, they certainly have one of football’s most prolific and explosive offenses.
Now the task for them will be to win their first postseason contest since the 2000 season, if not reach the AFC Championship Game for the first time since the 1992 campaign.
