Despite playing at a very high level is his first full NFL season as a starting quarterback, Brock Purdy still had trouble getting the respect he deserved this year from a number of pundits.
Yet he led the league in passer rating and QBR and led the 49ers to the Super Bowl after engineering two come-from-behind wins against excellent Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions teams in the playoffs.
He didn’t play his best in the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, but he likely did enough for his team to be able to win it all.
A number of current and former players and coaches have been singing Purdy’s praises, and that includes Rich Gannon, per SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“He’s off to an amazing start,” Gannon said in support of Purdy.
Gannon had a longtime career as a starting NFL quarterback, during which he was named to the Pro Bowl four times and led the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl appearance, so he would know a thing or two about judging the abilities of quarterbacks.
While Purdy doesn’t have a ridiculous amount of physical talent, he has a quick mind and reaction time, he is mobile and can accurately throw while on the run, and he’s accurate on passes beyond 15-20 yards.
In addition, he’s cool under pressure, and these are abilities that cannot really be taught.
Purdy was the last player taken in the 2022 draft, which likely plays a large role in many people not being willing to give him his due.
But it finally looks like the 49ers have a legitimate franchise quarterback, and they should remain in the hunt for their first Vince Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season in the immediate future.
