After winning their second straight Super Bowl championship and their third in the last five seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs made it clear that they’re going for a three-peat.
Since the AFL-NFL merger resulted in the formation of the Super Bowl, no team has won three straight NFL championships, and Patrick Mahomes and company would love to make modern football history next season.
But in order to do so, they will need to keep their current team intact, which means re-signing defensive stars Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed.
Sneed was asked by Kay Adams on “Up & Adams” what he wanted to say to Chiefs GM Brett Veach, and he simply said: “Pay me.”
Sneed has been gradually emerging as a stud in his four pro seasons, and this year, he registered 14 passes defended, two interceptions, and five tackles for loss during the regular season.
Kansas City is no longer a spectacular offensive team — with a young and unproven group of wide receivers this season, they reinvented themselves as a team that makes simple plays on offense and wins with defense.
Their defense finished second in both points and total yards allowed, and down the stretch of the Super Bowl, they prevented the talented and potent San Francisco 49ers from scoring that one additional touchdown that could’ve given them the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Losing Sneed and/or Jones in free agency this offseason would be a huge blow for the Chiefs moving forward, and it would create an opening for several other teams to supplant them as world champions next winter.
