There was a lot of hype surrounding the New York Jets last summer after they traded for future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers and added four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook.
But Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week 1 and Cook’s production took a nosedive, resulting in the Jets missing the playoffs for the umpteenth time in a row.
New York has done well in free agency this offseason, and thus former NFL QB David Carr feels they’re “definitely Super Bowl contenders,” per NFL Total Access.
Carr particularly singled out the addition of wide receiver Mike Williams in free agency and his ability to make receptions against man coverage due to his 6-foot-4 frame.
He feels Williams will become something of a security blanket for Rodgers and that Williams’ presence will make things easier on wideout Garrett Wilson.
The Jets, who had one of the NFL’s worst offensive lines last season, have also added left tackle Tyron Smith, and therefore they should be able to do a better job of protecting Rodgers.
Defensively, they now have linebacker Haason Reddick, whom they acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Eagles just days ago.
But everything will hinge on the 40-year-old Rodgers, and he will have to play at a high level for the Jets to be able to even make the playoffs.
The AFC looks to be even deeper than it was in 2023, and the AFC East will be very competitive.
The Buffalo Bills, who finished first in the division in 2023, aren’t going anywhere, and the Miami Dolphins should continue to be a threat despite the loss of a couple of key defenders.
