Geno Smith Has Strong Message After Latest Seahawks Decision

During the 2022 season, the Seattle Seahawks were one of the NFL’s most pleasant surprises, as they made the playoffs behind a big year from quarterback Geno Smith.

Smith, who to that point of his career had been thought of as nothing more than a decent backup, led the league in completion percentage, which earned him his first Pro Bowl nod and the Comeback Player of the Year award.

But he regressed somewhat this season, leading to arguments about whether the team should retain him.

They did just that, guaranteeing him over $12 million for next season by keeping him on the roster this week.

That led analyst Mina Kimes to note that Smith is not the problem in Seattle.

The quarterback responded with a strong message: “I’m only getting better!”

While Smith was named to the Pro Bowl again this year, he notched 3,624 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns, an output that paled in comparison to the 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns he threw for in 2022.

Seattle finished with a 9-8 record in 2023, the same record they posted the previous year, but they failed to claim the final playoff spot in the NFC.

They have some things going for them, including a solid wide receiver duo in D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett and rookie stud cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who made the Pro Bowl.

They haven’t been nearly as bad as many expected them to be after they traded franchise quarterback Russell Wilson prior to the 2022 campaign.

However, the Seahawks are stuck in that unenviable position of being just good enough but not great, and they may have to make some difficult decisions if they want to return to where they were a decade ago when they won the Super Bowl.
