Recently, a rumor started circulating about veteran tight end Darren Waller of the New York Giants strongly considering retirement at 31, which took many by surprise, especially given all that has gone on in his life over the last couple of years.
Although this was a surprising rumor to surface, it seems at this point it is inevitable that Waller will walk away from the game after only one season with the Giants, as he has informed the team that he intends to retire.
This is more bad news for the storied Giants franchise that desperately wants to bounce back after a forgettable 2023 campaign, in which the team failed miserably to live up to expectations after an impressive 2022 NFL season under head coach Brian Daboll.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the one positive aspect of Waller’s shocking retirement announcement is that the Giants will gain about $11.6 million in cap space, which will almost certainly come in handy ahead of next season.
So even though it is disappointing for the Giants to lose one of the best tight ends in the game to early retirement, New York will benefit from this extra cap space and might be able to make some more moves before the season gets underway in a few months.
The Giants will begin the 2024 NFL season at home at MetLife Stadium on September 8 against the visiting Minnesota Vikings, which will be a battle between two teams that have uncertain futures ahead, meaning it could be an interesting showdown in the Big Apple.
