Giants TE Is Reportedly ‘Contemplating’ Retirement

The New York Giants had a disappointing 2023 season after making the playoffs the previous year, and a lot of their problems were on the offensive side of the football.

They were 30th in points scored and 31st in passing yards, and they’re saddled with a below-average quarterback in Daniel Jones and a lack of legitimate pass-catching, playmaking threats.

They may lose one of their main skill players this offseason, as tight end Darren Waller is thinking about retiring, per Ryan Dunleavy via Doug Rush.

The Giants traded for Waller nearly a year ago by sending a 2023 third-round draft pick to the Las Vegas Raiders.

In 2023, he was second on the team with 52 receptions, which he turned into 552 yards and one touchdown in 12 games (he missed some time with a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 8).

At age 31, Waller may have something left in the tank, but he isn’t the strong producer he was a few years ago when he had back-to-back seasons of over 1,100 receiving yards.

New York badly needs an infusion of offensive talent, and their biggest task this offseason appears to be keeping star running back Saquon Barkley.

Barkley was hoping to get a lucrative contract extension last offseason, but he relented and played the 2023 campaign on a franchise tag, and it looks like that won’t be an option for 2024.

He’s the Giants’ only potent threat on offense, and losing him would likely send the organization back into the wilderness it entered once former quarterback Eli Manning started to decline several years ago.
