The next era of New England Patriots football arrived earlier than expected after the 2023 NFL season cost former head coach Bill Belichick his job.

Belichick struggled to keep the Patriots competitive after Tom Brady left the franchise and owner Robert Kraft decided it was time to part ways with the future Hall of Famer.

Belichick held a lot of power within the organization as he also served as the team’s general manager.

Although New England quickly elevated linebackers coach Jerod Mayo to become the new head coach, they have yet to interview anyone for their vacant general manager job.

In fact, it looks like the Patriots will leave that position open for the 2024 season, via Jonathan Jones of CBS.

“The Patriots don’t actually have to run a search for GM as long as they never actually name someone to that post,” Jones said. “Sources leaguewide are dubious New England will actually run a search this year.”

Kraft explained that the franchise has a lot of internal personnel that they’ll lean on for the upcoming season and that decisions will be more of a collaborative effort.

Director of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf will lead decision making for the time being, though there are no indications that a formal title change is coming.

It’s an interesting approach for the organization as it almost seems like an overcorrection for having Belichick run the personnel side for so long.

It remains to be seen if this path will work, but New England is sticking to its philosophies and it’ll be interesting to see if it pays off.
