Over the past couple of decades, the NFL has seen some elite tight ends come through the league and dominate the competition to make a case for the best player at that position in league history.
Even though Tony Gonzalez was once considered to be the cream of the crop at the tight end position in the modern game, he is no longer alone in the conversation for the greatest ever, with New England Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski and Kansas City Chiefs superstar Travis Kelce joining the debate.
With four Super Bowl titles to his credit, Gronkowski arguably has the edge over Kelce right now, even though the Chiefs superstar will have a chance to get a little bit closer if Kansas City can get the best of the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl next week.
Despite talk that Gronkowski is still the greatest tight end in NFL history, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett would take Kelce over the Patriots legend because he’s a better “route runner,” in his opinion, via “The Dan Patrick Show.”
Fortunately for Kelce, he still may have a few years of dominance left in him while playing with fellow superstar and future Hall of Famer Patrick Mahomes.
The debate might be much different when Kelce decides to retire, as he clearly still can play the game at a high level, and Mahomes is also showing no signs of slowing down.
If the Chiefs can keep playing at a high level like this while remaining in the title-contending conversation, Kelce may very well become the greatest tight end in NFL history.
