In the modern NBA, offense comes first. We’re not saying that it’s not important to get stops. Of course it is. We’re simply saying that if you can’t outscore your opponent, you’re going to get left behind.

The Dallas Mavericks can outscore their opponents. On the other hand, they do struggle to get stops. This is a recipe for winning basketball. It doesn’t feel like a recipe for championship basketball.

If Dallas wants to make a deep playoff run, they’ll have to improve their stopping power. The same holds true for the Sacramento Kings.

These are two of the most offensively oriented teams in the NBA. With that said, they could go about solving their defensive woes in different ways.

Could the Mavericks start by acquiring Harrison Barnes from the Kings?

The Trade Proposal

Sacramento Kings Receive: F/C Maxi Kleber, F/C Markieff Morris, F Derrick Jones Jr., 2025 Second-Round Pick (TOR via DAL), 2028 Second-Round Pick (MIA via DAL)

Dallas Mavericks Receive: F Harrison Barnes

Why would these teams make a trade when they’ve got the same goals? They’re both elite offensive teams who struggle on defense. How is it possible that they could help each other?

Well, they have different defensive struggles. The Kings’ issues start in the middle. Domantas Sabonis is a fantastic offensive player, but he isn’t much of a rim protector.

The Kings’ defense is without an anchor, but they rely on Sabonis too much offensively to fix that without moving him.

On the other hand, the Mavericks may have found their long-term anchor. Derrick Lively III has outperformed expectations as a rookie. With that said, their defensive depth on the wings is weak.

Does this deal help in that regard?

Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal

Defense isn’t Dallas’ only issue. Sure, their offense is elite, but the way that they’re producing may not be viable in the playoffs. The Mavericks lean too heavily on Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving to generate points.

This team could use a third option. Is Barnes an appropriate one? For many teams, the answer may be no. Barnes is more of a fourth – or even fifth-offensive option.

Doncic and Irving are both so high usage that it may be a moot point. Barnes could share third-option duties with Tim Hardaway Jr. and give the Mavericks a more varied offense.

Meanwhile, Barnes is a big wing who does play solid defense. That’s another piece that Dallas is missing. Can the Kings afford to lose that piece?

Why The Sacramento Kings Do The Deal

Sure. After all, Keegan Murray is remarkably similar to Barnes. That doesn’t mean that they can’t play together – each is an extremely portable player.

Still, it holds that the presence of one makes the other expendable. Here, the Kings are moving Barnes to enhance their depth. The best player they’re bringing in is likely Kleber.

He’s lost a step, but he’s still a versatile combo big who can help protect the rim when he’s sharing the floor with Sabonis, and also be his backup.

Yet, Jones Jr. and Morris have some value as well. The Kings are trading one starter for three rotation-caliber players in this deal. Whether that’s enough to improve their defense or not, their offense will keep them afloat.
