Years ago, Randy Moss made a living terrorizing and embarrassing NFL defensive backs, and he ended up as one of the greatest wide receivers the league had ever seen.
He retired among the all-time leaders in several statistical categories, and he was a no-brainer inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
His son, Thaddeus, played his college ball at NC State and LSU and he had a brief stint in the pros with the Washington Football Team and the Cincinnati Bengals.
But the younger Moss couldn’t even come close to duplicating his father’s success, and on Monday, he announced his retirement on Twitter.
The younger Moss went undrafted in 2020 and caught on with Washington that season, then he was waived the following spring.
The Bengals picked him up afterward, and he remained with them for 12 months.
They released him in September 2022, and afterward, he spent time with the Birmingham Stallions of the now-defunct United States Football League (USFL) and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
The younger Moss ended up never playing a single regular-season snap in the NFL, and he had just 38 receiving yards and one touchdown while in the USFL.
It isn’t common for the son of a star or all-time great to reach that same level of success, and football fans could be reminded of that fact starting this season.
The sons of Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens, and Frank Gore are set to enter the league, and they will have to chase the tall, dark shadows of their fathers.
