The Washington Commanders, coming off a 4-13 finish this season and armed with a new ownership group, recently fired Ron Rivera after he had been their head coach for the last four seasons.
They hired Dan Quinn, who had served as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator over the last few years, to be their new head coach, which has left Dallas looking to fill that position.
Reportedly, they will interview Rivera for that position in the coming days.
“David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports the Cowboys are expected to interview Ron Rivera for the job next week, confirming what was expected if Quinn left,” wrote Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.
In his first season with Washington, Rivera got the team to the playoffs after posting a 7-9 record in the regular season, only to lose to Tom Brady and the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, 31-23.
It was only the sixth time they had made the playoffs dating back to the early 1990s.
Prior to coming to the nation’s capital, Rivera had been the Carolina Panthers’ head coach from 2011 to 2019, and in 2015, he guided them to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Denver Broncos in Peyton Manning’s final game.
At times this year, the Cowboys looked dominant defensively behind star cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and DaRon Bland and Defensive Player of the Year candidate Micah Parsons.
However, that defense fell completely apart in the playoffs against the Green Bay Packers, as it spotted Jordan Love’s crew a 27-0 lead in the second quarter in what ended up being a shocking defeat.
The Cowboys have continually underachieved in the playoffs, and they need to find the code that will open the combination lock to their full potential on both sides of the football.
