The Baltimore Ravens made a big splash on Tuesday by agreeing to terms with free-agent running back Derrick Henry, whom they will pay $16 million over the next two years.
Henry may be a bit diminished compared to a few years ago, but he is still a productive back who is still a big load to deal with for opponents.
The Ravens already finished with the NFL’s best record in 2023 and made it to the AFC Championship Game in January, and Skip Bayless tweeted that they “just won next year’s Super Bowl” by nabbing Henry.
Baltimore, as they have throughout their history, wins by pounding the ball on the ground and holding teams down defensively, and Henry still excels at pounding out yardage on the ground.
He ran for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2023 as a member of the Tennessee Titans, and the previous season, he had 1,538 rushing yards.
In 2020, he became one of just a handful of players in NFL history to surpass the 2,000-rushing-yard mark in a single season, and he has led the league in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns twice each.
Henry did suffer a Jones fracture in 2021 that limited him to eight games, and his efficiency has fallen from a peak of 5.4 yards per carry in 2020 to 4.2 yards per carry in 2023.
Still, he should elevate a Ravens team that was already fourth in rushing touchdowns and first in rushing yards in 2023 while taking pressure off quarterback Lamar Jackson, the reigning MVP.
