Grilled Pizza Margherita

This grilled pizza margherita is as delicious as it is simple to make. It’s nothing more than five ingredients: Dough, mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, tomatoes and fresh basil. Well, six, as we need some flour to prep the dough. And the cooking process is so easy, just a few minutes in the pizza oven insert on the Primo kamado. Feel free to add whatever ingredients that you hanker for to make this your own.

This is not the Grillin’ Fools first foray into grilled pizza. In fact, they cooked this deconstructed buffalo chicken pizza on this exact same pizza oven.

If you are slightly more daring, give this pulled pork pizza with pickles – yes, pickles. Give it a shot.

If you want to skip the pickles, here’s another pulled pork pizza.

Here’s one of my faves – Jerk Chicken Pizza.

Grilled Pizza Margherita Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of flour
  • 16 oz. ready-made pizza dough
  • ½ cup marinara sauce
  • 8 oz sliced, fresh Mozzarella cheese
  • 1 Roma tomato, sliced
  • 2 tablespoon fresh basil leaves, sliced

Prepare the Grill and Pizza Oven

Preheat the American Made Primo Oval XL (or whatever grill you are using) to 400F degrees and maintain the temperature. Place the attachment for the pizza oven on the grill and place a pizza stone on top of the grill grates.

Open the pizza oven door to make sure the height of the grates and stone are placed with enough room to slide the pizza in and out of the oven.

The above two pics are from the Buffalo Chicken Pizza the Grillin’ Fools did. I didn’t get a pic of the pizza oven up close and these show it beautifully. That and that’s an amazing pizza recipe.

The pizza stone will need to heat up for about 15 minutes before baking the pizza.

Grilled Pizza Margherita Instructions

Lightly flour the surface of a large pizza spatula or upside-down baking sheet. Roll out the dough to about ¼” thickness and spread the marinara sauce around with a spoon or pastry brush.

Place the mozzarella slices on top of the sauce and then top with the sliced tomatoes.

Open the pizza oven door and shake the spatula or baking sheet a bit to release the pizza onto the stone inside the oven:

Close the oven door and allow the pizza to bake on the stone for about 10 minutes. Use the spatula again to retrieve the pizza and remove it from the oven (if you’re using the baking sheet, you’ll want to use a large, metal BBQ spatula for this):

Sprinkle the pizza with the chopped basil. Allow the pizza to cool for about 5 minutes before slicing and eating:

Grilled Pizza Margherita Summary

Other than a plain cheese pizza, or a simple pepperoni, this is about as easy as it gets in terms of home made pizza. Honestly, there’s about 5 more minutes of work than a frozen pizza and this cooks faster so you could probably make this quicker than that Totino’s in the freezer. And notice that browned cheese on top in the picture above. That browning really takes the flavor of this pizza to the next level. That’s not happening in the oven without turning on the broiler. And if you do that, don’t walk away from the oven for more than 2 minutes or that browning could be blackening.

Give this a shot. It’s so easy and sooooo much better than that frozen pizza. Even that more expensive rising crust deal.

Also, if you could leave a great review with lots of stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ that would be most appreciated!
