We’ve all been there. You’re craving some delicious grilled ribs, but you’re watching your sugar intake. So, you purchase one of those bottled sugar-free BBQ sauce. You open it up, take a quick taste, and instantly regret your decision. Why? Because it’s super sweet or doesn’t have that quintessential BBQ flavor.

Some sugar substitutes are too sweet!

Our sugar free BBQ sauce doesn’t suffer from that problem. Instead, we build the flavors and add the sweetener incrementally. Most sauce recipes use intensely sweet sugar free sweeteners. Many contain sucralose or erythritol, which can cause digestive upset in some people. We’ve sidestepped both of those ingredients by using monk fruit sweetener. The results are amazing, and it has a perfect balance between slightly sweet with tart and piquant flavors.

This recipe makes 3 cups of sugar free BBQ sauce, 12 portions, or 1/4 cup serving per person. Each serving contains 3 grams of carbohydrates.

What is Monkfruit Sweetener?

Monk fruit, also known as lo han guo, is a small round fruit from China that has gained global popularity due to the rise of sugar-free, paleo, and low-carb diets. The sweetest part of the monk fruit is mogroside, which is extracted from the fruit and processed to create monk fruit sweetener. This sugar substitute is very potent, with 1/3 cup of monk fruit sweetener being equivalent to 1 cup of sugar. When using, it is best to start with a small amount and increase gradually.

Ingredients

  • Sugar-free ketchup: We’ve used Primal Kitchen Organic Unsweetened Ketchup with amazing results
  • Monkfruit sweetener: You can find this in most supermarket baking aisles or online.
  • Sugar-free tomato paste
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Olive oil
  • Sweet onion
  • Garlic
  • Dry mustard
  • Cayenne (optional)
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • Liquid smoke (optional, but recommended for this sauce)
  • Butter

How to Make Sugar Free BBQ sauce

  • Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add olive oil.
  • Next, add onions and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  • Add all remaining ingredients to the saucepan, except liquid smoke and butter. Stir through and simmer on low for 10-12 minutes.
  • Take control of the flavor by tasting the sauce. Add 1 tablespoon at a time until it has reached the desired flavor.
  • Remove the barbecue sauce from the heat and stir in liquid smoke and butter.
  • Let the sauce cool for 10 minutes.
  • Next, blend the sauce in a blender or food processor and return it to the pot. You might need to do this in two batches.

Using and Storing Sugar Free BBQ Sauce

  • Use right away on grilled or smoked meats, or store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. You can also freeze the sauce for up to 6 weeks.
  • Rewarm the sauce on the stovetop before applying it to grilled and smoked meats.

How to use it

  • Apply it to smoked, grilled, or baked meats during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • Apply a thin coat of sauce every 10 minutes.
  • You can also serve it as a side sauce.
  • Turn it into a creamy dipping sauce by combining 1 cup sugar free BBQ sauce, with 1/3 cup real mayonnaise and serve.
