Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown Cigar Review

Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sungrown Epicure Cigar Review

Having already written a review for the Connecticut cigar in this 30th Anniversary series, I’m now moving on to the Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown. As in that previous review, this one is also in the Epicure (6×54) vitola.

On its surface, the two cigars seem very similar. In fact, those without much experience could confuse the light brown tone of the Connecticut version with the Sun Grown wrapper of this cigar.

In spite of the visual similarities, I’m expecting the flavor profile for this Perdomo Sun Grown to differ significantly from the Connecticut.

Some brief online research did not provide much specifics regarding the filler and binder used in this 30th Anniversary Sun Grown.

This being said, I expect the blend to be different from the Connecticut, though both cigars boast Nicaraguan binder and fillers. Even if Perdomo themselves don’t advertise the nuances, I do expect the difference between the blends to extend past the change in wrapper.

Perdomo 30th Sun Grown Cigar: Look & Feel

  • Wrapper Hue: Milk Chocolate
  • Rolling Consistency: Bumpy

The Perdomo 30th Sun Grown Cigar presents a wrapper hue reminiscent of milk chocolate that is also somewhat rustic, especially when compared to the Connecticut variant from the last review.

Perdomo 30th Sun Grown Wrapper Details

In my review samples, I observed a notable amount of toothiness and bumps across the surface, alongside a few prominent veins, all contributing to this rugged charm.

The wrapper has a matte finish, and while bumpy, also offers a firm spring. The aromas off the foot and wrapper include cinnamon, cocoa powder, and a hint of sea salt, promising a complex and inviting smoking experience.

Pre-Light Review Perdomo 30th Sungrown

Pre-Lighting Experience

  • Draw: Ideal
  • Aromas: Cocoa, Charcoal, Cinnamon

On the dry draw, this Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun-Grown cigar offers an ideal amount of resistance. It also has rich, sweet aromas that blend notes of indulgent cocoa puff cereal, the smoky essence of a lit charcoal grill, and a dash of cinnamon.

Given Perdomo’s rigorous draw testing process at their factory, the perfection in the draw is exactly what I anticipated, aligning with the high standards expected from their cigars.

1st Third Smoking Experience

  • Notes: Grilled Steak, Oak, Hazelnut

Lighting up the 30th Anniversary Sungrown is a surprising experience. Unlike what I expected from the pre-light draw, the first notes are reminiscent of steak fresh off a charcoal grill.

This is followed by secondary notes of oak, akin to a fine bourbon, with hints of hazelnut lingering on the palate. The retrohale introduces a rich note akin to Dutch-processed cocoa powder, adding a depth of flavor.

Perdomo Sungrown 30th Anniversary Review

This Sun-grown variant exhibits a stronger profile than its Connecticut counterpart, delivering a solid 7 out of 10 in strength during the first third. This added intensity marks a distinctive departure, offering a more robust smoking experience early on.

2nd Third Smoking Experience

  • Notes: Almonds, Allspice, Raisins

As the Perdomo 30th Sun Grown progresses into its second third, the flavor profile unfolds beautifully, introducing the nutty richness of almonds, warm notes of allspice, and an undertone of raisins.

Second Third Review 30th Anniversary Sungrown

The retrohale compares the fruity notes found in a high-quality cup of black coffee, enriching the smoking experience with its complexity. The wrapper, described on the Perdomo website as “Cuban seed,” suggests a lineage possibly related to Corojo, known for its flavorful yet not overwhelmingly spicy character.

This tobacco strikes a delightful balance, offering just enough spice to enliven the palate without overpowering it.

Final Third Smoking Experience

  • Notes: Cedar, Nuts, Vanilla

In the final stretch, the cigar’s strength mellows significantly, settling at a gentle 4 out of 10. The concluding flavors blend cedar and a rich nuttiness, rounded off with hints of vanilla. On the retrohale, a touch of cayenne pepper adds a spicy kick.

Overall Experience

The Perdomo 30th Sungrown is an impressive cigar, featuring a band that dazzles with gold holographic touches against a cherry red backdrop, reminiscent of classic Cuban cigars yet with an added modern twist. The packaging echoes this luxurious design, sporting a red and gold motif on the inside while the exterior is finished in a sophisticated dark wood stain.

Pairing Recommendations For Perdomo 30th Sun Grown Cigar

The holographic gold details of the Perdomo 30th Anniversary cigars exude a celebratory and formal vibe, making them fitting for grand occasions.

I can imagine enjoying this cigar at a steakhouse, where the rich, funky notes of a dry-aged steak would beautifully complement the spiced and savory profile of the blend. Pairing it with mixed nuts could also highlight the cigar’s almond and hazelnut notes, while a milk chocolate and peanut butter candy bar would be the perfect dessert companion.

When it comes to drinks, a fine bourbon like Chicken Cock, known for its sweet vanilla nuances, would be an excellent match for the Perdomo 30th Sungrown. Alternatively, champagne or a crisp sparkling wine could enhance its nutty aspects, and a black coffee post-dinner would round off the experience perfectly.

Closing Thoughts

As mentioned in my previous review, the 30th line offers great value, and this Sun Grown wrapper is no exception. Its large box size and consistent draw make it an easy pick for celebrations.
