After winning two Super Bowl championships over the previous four seasons, the Kansas City Chiefs look vulnerable as the NFL playoffs are about to begin.
While they won a respectable 11 games in the regular season, they had trouble winning close games and have a lack of consistently reliable threats at wide receiver.
There had been talk that the Chiefs are on the verge of becoming a legitimate dynasty, but Chris Broussard said on FS1’s “First Things First” that if they don’t win the Vince Lombardi Trophy this season, they likely won’t become a dynasty.
Winning one world championship in any major team sport is hard enough, but going back-to-back is several times harder, and it truly proves the dominance and staying power of a team beyond a shadow of a doubt.
One of the reasons it is so hard to win two rings in a row is the difficulty of keeping a team’s core intact and the difficulty of replacing aging players with younger replacements, especially given how restrictive the NFL’s salary cap is.
The Chiefs traded superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins prior to last season, and it is believed they did so for salary reasons, as Hill quickly received a lucrative extension from the Dolphins after arriving in South Florida.
Kansas City won it all last season as wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster replaced just enough of Hill’s production, but Smith-Schuster left this past offseason in free agency.
While rookie wideout Rashee Rice had a nice 2023 season, he hasn’t yet proven he can come through under pressure.
