Going into this year’s NFL playoffs, the Buffalo Bills looked red-hot and were perhaps the most dangerous team anyone could face.

But their Super Bowl dreams evaporated when they lost a thriller in the divisional round to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

All of a sudden, the Bills’ immediate future is murky, and there is speculation that head coach Sean McDermott and star wide receiver Stefon Diggs won’t be around much longer.

But general manager Brandon Beane seemed to go to bat for Diggs by giving him lots of praise.

“He’s a No. 1 receiver. I firmly believe that. I’m not wavering off of that,” Beane said, via ProFootballTalk. “I think teams — Listen, we have to continue to put weapons out there to keep teams from bracketing him or locking him down in different ways to take him away. They know you’re gonna want to — Stef can still play. I’m sure he would love to have that deep ball again. He’d be the first to tell you. He’s super competitive. He’s going to work his tail off this offseason.”

Diggs had a strong year with 1,183 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during the regular season, although he wasn’t selected to appear in the Pro Bowl.

There was talk all year long that he had a rift with someone in the organization, and it was rumored that the one he had a rift with was quarterback Josh Allen, although Allen has denied it.

A big contract extension for Diggs will take effect starting next season, and some feel that is the reason Buffalo will let him go.

But if Buffalo is to let him go, they will be hard-pressed to replace his production, since he is their biggest weapon.

The team was 6-6 in late November after an overtime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and their chances of reaching playoffs looked bleak.

But they won each of their final five games of the regular season to finish 11-6, giving them and their fans hope that they could do something special.

Yet they were unable to take advantage of a Chiefs team that has been in transition all year and fell in heartbreaking fashion by just three points, and that loss could trigger major changes.
