The Boston Celtics are in the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals for the sixth time in the last eight seasons, and their fans hope this is the year they win their first world championship since 2008.
They finished with the best record in the league by a mile during the regular season, and they know the only way to truly validate that earlier success is to win it all.
Drake Maye, the incoming rookie for the New England Patriots, another Boston-area franchise that is accustomed to success, was on hand at TD Garden on Tuesday for Game 1 between the Celtics and Indiana Pacers, and he even showed off his own custom Celtics jersey, per Mike Reiss.
New England sports fans are very proud, as their teams have had plenty of success in recent years.
After a rough start to the 21st century, the Celtics won that 2008 NBA title, and when that team, which was led by Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen, ran its course, they endured a very short rebuilding process before they became a power again.
The Boston Red Sox ended the so-called “Curse of the Bambino” by winning the 2004 World Series, and they have added three more titles since.
The NHL’s Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2011, and of course, the Patriots took home six Vince Lombardi Trophies from 2001 to 2018 thanks to legendary quarterback Tom Brady.
Now, Maye will look to follow in Brady’s footsteps, but he will have to start his pro career without the type of weapons Brady had for most of his career.
But perhaps he has what it takes to continue Brady’s impressive legacy and make the Patriots winners again before too long.
