After winning 10 of their first 11 games this season, the Philadelphia Eagles completely collapsed down the stretch, and that collapse culminated with a 32-9 loss in the wild-card round of the playoffs to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Right now, many are pointing the finger at head coach Nick Sirianni for not doing an adequate job, and those pundits are saying that he has perhaps lost the locker room.
It has led to speculation about his job security, but Ian Rapoport said that he has gotten support from his players, including quarterback Jalen Hurts, and that his resume is still strong.
“I think it’s fair to say, there’s still some uncertainty surrounding Nick Sirianni,” Rapoport said.
Last season, with the addition of wide receiver A.J. Brown and linebacker Haason Reddick, Sirianni guided them to a 14-3 record and a Super Bowl appearance while engineering the NFL’s third-best scoring offense and a defense that was second in total yards allowed.
But the way the Eagles came apart at the seams over the last six weeks or so was concerning, and the reality was that the “check engine” light was on well before the start of that plunge.
Even when they were 10-1, they were barely winning games against inferior opponents and having to come from behind, something they weren’t doing nearly as often in 2022.
Rapoport said that instead of firing Sirianni, management may instead opt to make a change underneath him, perhaps at defensive coordinator given their defensive struggles this year.
