For the fourth time in the last five seasons, the San Francisco 49ers are headed to the NFC Championship Game, and they’re still favored to not only beat the Detroit Lions there but to also win the Super Bowl.
Quarterback Brock Purdy has had quite the ride from being the last player taken in the 2022 draft, to playing like an elite QB, to getting to the NFC title game, but he still isn’t getting the respect he deserves from the national media.
Some still question his decision-making, but head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy is “as good as any quarterback” he’s had at making correct decisions in the passing game, per NBC Sports.
In the past, Shanahan coached not only Jimmy Garoppolo, who was a good game manager for him, but he was also the offensive coordinator for Washington and Atlanta teams that had Robert Griffin III and Matt Ryan, respectively, under center.
With Garoppolo, San Francisco was also a contender the previous three seasons and change, but his limitations were clear, especially when they were behind.
Purdy has clearly been better than Garoppolo, especially in three areas: accuracy on throws beyond 20 yards, getting out of the pocket, and making quick and correct reads.
Against Detroit, the Niners will be facing a team with an outstanding run defense, which may mean that the Niners’ chances of heading to the Las Vegas area to play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy will rest on Purdy’s arm.
They’re hoping to have wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who missed most of the divisional round versus the Green Bay Packers due to an injured shoulder, back in action, which would greatly increase their chances of winning.
