Over the past few years, the running back position in the NFL has been devalued by teams across the league, as star players at the position take arguably the biggest beating of any player during the season and aren’t paid the same anymore.

Before last season, star backs like Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley voiced their opinions about players at their position not being paid what they are worth, but failed to secure lucrative long-term deals with their respective teams and now have moved onto other teams this offseason.

Although superstar Christian McCaffrey was one of those star players who expressed disappointment in how the league values the position, he might not be in that camp anymore, with the San Francisco 49ers signing him to a lucrative two-year deal worth $19 million annually.

McCaffrey is coming off arguably the best season of his career in the NFL, and Marcus Spears of ESPN believes he’s worth every penny he’ll get paid due to being extremely versatile via NFL on ESPN.

“Christian McCaffrey is one of one in the NFL. … He’s not just a running back,” Spears said.

McCaffrey was extremely happy after inking a new deal with the 49ers this week and expressed his relief in being able to stay in San Francisco, as he feels at home and excited about the future of the team.

In 16 games during the 2023 campaign, McCaffrey rushed for a league-best 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns on 272 carries while also making an impact as a receiver, catching 67 passes for 564 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
