It is a brave new world for the Bill Belichick-less New England Patriots, but they have at least a trickle of hope moving forward because they took Drake Maye with the No. 3 pick in last month’s draft.
Maye, who excelled the last two seasons at the University of North Carolina, has a good chance of becoming their franchise quarterback of the future, but they have very little, if any, support around him right now, roster-wise.
Some feel Maye should be brought along slowly and not even start when this coming season begins, but Nick Wright said on FS1’s “First Things First” that new head coach Jerod Mayo and owner Robert Kraft won’t allow that to happen.
There are those who believe rookie quarterbacks, even those as loaded with potential as Maye is, should sit for all or much of their rookie campaigns, but the reality is there is only so much they can learn by not playing and standing on the sideline.
Patriots fans are spoiled, and understandably so — they have enjoyed six Super Bowl championships since the 2001 season, and they aren’t accustomed to the type of struggles the team has endured lately.
New England went 4-13 last season, which was their worst record since 1992, and with a barren roster, they could be doomed to a similar finish this coming season if Maye were to sit.
But if Maye starts right away, he could show flashes of brilliance and perhaps even drive them to a couple of unexpected wins, which would create some tangible hope for their fan base.
