The Pittsburgh Steelers and their fans are gearing up for a season that could see the team become rather competitive.
They made big headlines by acquiring future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson, as well as by trading for Justin Fields and landing star linebacker Patrick Queen this offseason.
At the very least, the Steelers’ defense should be strong and give them a chance to win many games.
But they have to figure out what to do with veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, who is reportedly holding out of offseason workouts and will hold out of upcoming OTAs because he wants a contract extension, per Jeremy Fowler.
Heyward, who has played each of his 13 NFL seasons with Pittsburgh, is a six-time Pro Bowler, but he may not have much juice left.
His numbers greatly declined in 2023, and he missed six games due to a groin injury he sustained in Week 1.
He is part of a strong front seven that includes star pass rusher T.J. Watt and now Queen, who was named to the Pro Bowl last season.
If Heyward agrees to an extension and returns to form this fall, he could play a big role in the Steelers returning to their accustomed place at or near the top of the NFL.
No one outside of Western Pennsylvania seems to think they have a real shot at reaching the Super Bowl or even finishing first in the AFC North, but winning at least one playoff game isn’t out of the question.
