Midway through last season, Buffalo Bills running back Damien Harris took what should’ve been a routine carry against the New York Giants during Week 6.
But he ran into Bobby Okereke and suffered what initially appeared to be a serious neck injury, and he had to be helped off the field via an ambulance.
On Monday, Harris took to his Instagram account to announce his retirement from the NFL after five seasons, per Alaina Getzenberg.
Harris first rose to prominence during four seasons at the University of Alabama under legendary head coach Nick Saban, who also recently retired.
Harris backed up Derrick Henry during his freshman season, but he became a starter the following year and ran for 1,040 yards that season.
In 2017, as a junior, he scored 11 touchdowns and notched 1,000 yards while helping to lead Alabama to the College Football Playoff National Championship title, which it won over the University of Georgia Bulldogs.
Harris was taken in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, allowing him to spend his rookie season as a teammate of legendary quarterback Tom Brady.
His high-water mark came in 2021 when he ran for 929 yards and 15 touchdowns, which was good enough to take the rebuilding Patriots back to the playoffs.
He then signed with the Bills as a free agent last March.
After Harris’ injury, which ended his season, Buffalo looked to have an outside shot at the Super Bowl after ending the regular season with a five-game winning streak.
However, they lost in the Divisional round of the playoffs by three points to the Kansas City Chiefs, an ending their fans are all too familiar with.
