The Cincinnati Bengals may have missed the playoffs in the 2023 NFL season, but the team is poised to compete in the AFC once the 2024 campaign rolls around.
Joe Burrow’s season-ending wrist injury eliminated their chances of making the postseason, though the Bengals didn’t do themselves any favors by starting out slow.
Complicating matters this offseason is Tee Higgins’ contract situation, as he is eligible for an extension.
Cincinnati decided to franchise tag Higgins and the receiver reportedly responded by asking for a trade in hopes of landing the deal he covets.
Higgins is a talented receiver who would be a No. 1 option on most other teams, but plays behind Ja’Marr Chase, who is the unquestioned alpha in the passing game.
Despite his future with the Bengals up in the air, Higgins revealed he anticipated playing for the team in 2024, via Charlie Clifford of WLWT.
“I do anticipate it,” Higgins said. “I’ve grown a love for Cincy that I didn’t think I would, but I’m looking forward to it.”
It’s good that Higgins is remaining professional about his situation, especially considering that the most likely outcome is they retain him in hopes of making a deep playoff run.
Higgins dealt with injuries last season, which may have hurt his negotiating power, but it would be foolish for the Bengals to allow him to play out the year without at least exploring what they could get back in a deal.
Cincinnati may be forced to eventually trade him given their cap situation, so the situation will be worth monitoring between now and the start of the regular season.
