Over the past few years, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been a constant source of speculation surrounding the team’s head coaching position and Mike Tomlin’s future in the NFL.
Even though Tomlin shows results on an annual basis by getting the Steelers into the NFL playoffs year after year, he’s struggled in the postseason over the years, leading to frustration about the team’s prospects of winning another Super Bowl title in the near future.
This year was a rough one for the Steelers, with the team really struggling on the offensive side of the football, which made many believe Pittsburgh was going to miss the postseason altogether.
Fortunately for the Steelers, Pittsburgh was playoff-bound once again, even though the team didn’t pose a serious threat to the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the playoffs, especially on the road without superstar T.J. Watt, who was nursing a knee injury.
Following the loss to the Bills, there were questions about Tomlin’s future, which he didn’t want to answer, but Watt gave his two cents by giving the longtime head coach a huge endorsement via Christopher Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
“I want to play for Mike T. It was huge in my contract talks that I don’t want to play for anyone other than Mike T,” Watt said.
Clearly, Watt has tremendous respect for Tomlin, and that bodes well for the head coach’s long-term future with the team.
However, things can change quickly if the results are not there, and even though Tomlin has success year to year in making the playoffs, the postseason success hasn’t been there, and it’s anyone’s guess as to how long the organization will stand for that.
