Many people feel the San Francisco 49ers still have the most talented team in the NFL even though they lost last season’s Super Bowl in heartbreaking fashion.

Outside of Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, the team that beat them in February’s big game, they have the league’s best tight end in George Kittle, who was named to both the Pro Bowl and All-Pro First-Team last season and put up 1,020 yards and six touchdowns.

On Monday, the 49ers added some depth at that position by signing Logan Thomas, a tight end who spent the last four seasons with the Washington Commanders, per Mike Garafolo.

Thomas was reasonably productive in 2023, catching 55 passes for 496 yards and four touchdowns.

He will essentially be replacing the departed Charlie Woerner, who had just three receptions for 32 yards in 2023.

Thomas was a fourth-round draft choice in 2014 by the Arizona Cardinals in 2014, and after barely playing for them as a rookie, he joined four other teams before finally emerging with Washington in 2020.

That year, he had 72 catches, 670 yards, and six touchdowns, all of which were career-highs.

Interestingly, he had started his career as a quarterback, but by 2017, he had been converted to a tight end.

If Thomas remains spry at age 32 (he will turn 33 on July 1), he can give San Francisco the ability to preserve Kittle, who is 30 years of age and somewhat injury-prone.

He could represent yet another weapon on offense for a Niners team that is already loaded with weapons throughout the field.
